What's your hangover cure?

Holiday parties are coming up, and with glasses of bubbly come hangovers. What's your hangover remedy? Mine used to be a giant Chipotle burrito (#classy), but then I heard a genius cure that weirdly seems to work...
Reflexology. When you wake up, rub the outer edge of your right foot, halfway between the middle of your foot and your pinky toe. This is the reflex point to the liver. You may notice some "crunchy" texture, which is a sign that some congestion is in the area. Kind of gross! But also kind of awesome!

  1. ahh thanks for the tip! i notice if i eat anything before bed after drinking it helps me (if i don't end up throwing it up). if i do end up with a bag hang over I usually get Five Guys or any type of greasy burger.

  2. If I know it's going to be really festive, I'll take 2 ibuprofen prior to the party. And then midday the next day, bacon burgers and fries. Holla.

  3. An iced mocha and bacon. Bacon solves all kinds of problems, right?

  5. I swear by this: before bed, take a Vitamin B Complex vitamin with a large glass of water. I got the idea from a friend who ended up in the hospital's drunk tank, who said they gave him a shot of Vitamin B to help him recover. The water helps rehydrate you while you sleep. It works so well!

  6. I heard burned toast, eggs, honey, and coffeed all of them have nutrients to recover. Sometimes love a huge diet coke, also, a friend told me once, "don't you just crave a salad when you are hungover?" I said, no, not really, but ever since have leaned toward veggies because I think they help bring balance. :)

  14. Not completely related, but funny:

I went to dinner with my cousins, dad and stepmom recently. We had all had a drink before dinner and one during dinner. When we got back to the house, my stepmother asked my cousin "What do you drink after you've been drinking?" Thinking she meant hangover cure, she replied "I dunno, water? What do you drink after you've been drinking?" My stepmother's response: "I drink vodka." Oy!

I don't find that burnt toast works, myself. I've read that whilst the carbon in treated charcoal is used to absorb toxins in hospitals sometimes, it's not the same stuff as on toast.

Always looking for more hangover cures. Not that I get many, of course... :S

  20. the"burnt" part of toast is actually carcinogenic and beyond toxic for your body. Comparably speaking, the hangover/alcohol is actually BETTER for you than the toast (if we are talking health here)... so I'd watch out with this one

In grad school, we discovered they work miracles for hangovers too :) they're OTC, but I've only been able to find them in medical supply catalogs. Needless to say, they are going in our hotel guest bags for our wedding this summer!

  26. I have gotten a lot better about not drinking to the point of hangovers, but I find that if I'm feeling less than stellar the morning after a party, a Starbucks Frappucino is a big help. I don't know if it's the cold or the sugar or the extra shot of espresso I ask for, but it works for me!

That's pretty much the only time I go to Starbucks!

  33. No. HONESTLY. The wondercure for a hangover is oatmeal. Have a bowl of instant oatmeal with a large glass of water with a little OJ in it. You will be right as rain. I also can't sleep after I have been drinking, so I get up early and take a walk. I like to clean during this first (still drunk) wake-up, too. It's like magic when I wake up from my afternoon nap and the house is in order and the dishes in the washer. <3

  36. Great tips, especially loving the reflexology. I heard it's beast to eat something with butter or a little grease (french fries!) before you start drinking to line your stomach and help with the alcohol absorption. Not sure if that is true or not...

How about not drinking so much that you get a hangover? Wasn't that something which was cool when you were a teenager?

Be careful with the burnt toast - it causes cancer!

    ReplyDelete
  47. see, the problem with a remedy that requires you take it BEFORE going to bed is that if you are drunk enough to induce a hangover, you're not thinking about "oh i need to make some perfectly burnt toast" right before bed. your thoughts are more like "bed. comfy. crash. sleep." LOL but in all seriousness, if I ever have my wits about me enough, I will be trying that :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. i always have the same amount of water as I have had to drink. double fist it, one hand is holding a glass of wine, the other hand is holding a bottle of water.

    ReplyDelete
  49. But remember the burnt part of the toast is carcinogenic!

For me, Quickeze and Panadol, not that I've needed them for a long while.

Antacids negate the acidic effects of alcohol (which make you want to throw up) and panadol softens the pains.

Also, citrus drinks will do you no good the following day.

  66. i take a multivitamin or b vitamins if i have them before bed with a big glass of water-- or right when i wake up if i forget the night before.

that's also why you don't get hangovers as easily from homebrew-- it's unfiltered and yeast has a lot of vitamin b6. at least, that's my excuse for drinking homebrew. one of many excuses. :)

  67. I never have a hangover, I find it such an infantile thing to go to far with alcohol. It's bad for you. Not to mention you do stupid things when you have too much, you're useless the day after, it costs.. There are only reasons not to drink for me.

  69. I've never had a hangover before, and I plan to keep it that way (surviving college without one probably means I'm safe for life). I've heard they're horrible, and I absolutely hate being sick (biggest baby ever). The burnt toast cure seems surprising considering the fact that charcoal is used to induce vomiting, which I suppose you would already be more susceptible to if you've been drinking.

    ReplyDelete
  70. REFLEXOLOGY rocks!!... it actually helped bring my baby into this world..... (i was overdue and reflexology saved me from being induced!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think the best cure for me is to plan ahead. I drink glasses and glasses of water during the day before a night out. And I make sure to have a glass between every couple of drinks. The only time I have had a hangover is when I didn't follow this, at which point my lovely boyfriend bought me a greasy burger. :)

  74. A giant bowl of Pho and a lot of water!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I have never heard of doing either of these things. I'll definitely be trying the burnt toast- hopefully I won't walk away and burn down the house, lol. My hangover go-to is also a fatty burrito. I don't think it makes me feel better, but it is a great excuse to eat such amazing food.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Ginger ale with bitters. It has tons of herbal thingy majigities in it. When I waited tables in college, our shift manager would always make it for us when came in hungover.

Also, smart water (but that might be a placebo effect, I'm not sure).

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous7:41 PM

For some reason, the idea of a "crunchy texture" in my foot makes me nauseous! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yeah I would NOT recommend eating burnt toast regularly. Consuming straight carbon like that dramatically increases your chances of getting stomach cancer.

As an alternative, I would recommend a bread-y breakfast and some pedialyte for electrolytes!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Okay, bear with me...a big ol' glass of Metamucil before bed. Got me through my own roarin' twenties in the West Village. I SWEAR the fiber soaks it all up....just cant vouch for the HOW it works. Then again, who cares? It works!

(And no one can try to tell you its carcinogenic.)

    ReplyDelete
  80. And I just have to say, it absolutely cracks me up that so many people have such a problem with the negative side effects of regularly consuming burnt toast, but not a soul seems bothered by being so drunk on a regular basis that you would need to consume it....

    ReplyDelete
  81. A bottle of coconut water (no special flavor) before bed!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Thank god I'm not the only one who was thinking - "Oh no.. burnt toast is bad! Carcinogen!"

Before going to bed: drinking lots of water and taking 2 aspirin. If I was too drunk to remember to do that.... then the following morning: a greasy bacon egg & cheese sandwich and a fountain coke!

  88. I went to a bachelorette party a couple weeks ago, and at the end of the night, one of the girls brought out a bag of chia seeds and said that if we mixed about a tablespoon in water and drank it we would be great the next morning! I did, and felt completely normal when I woke up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Toast and tea! Chamomile tea, to be precise. I love peppermint tea just for headaches, but the mint is too strong for a weak stomach. And soothing music. There's nothing like a little Mozart at low volume when feeling sick.

I know you try to keep this blog light and fun. I don't want to be prudish, because I know that some people need to drink to have a good time. I don't really know too much about the topic, but it seems to me that recommending burnt toast isn't the healthiest thing... and advocating hangovers isn't really cool. When you have so many followers, don't you feel you have a slight responsibility to not provide advice that might be detrimental to people's health?? I'm not trying to be rude, just curious.

  91. Burnt toast, huh? Fascinating! I usually just try to drink lots of water, and then in the morning tons of coffee and a huge greasy breakfast sandwich. And lots of naps. But I don't know if any of that helps. Definitely going to try burnt toast over the holidays.

  98. Take a multivitamin before bed. I SWEAR this works better than anything I've ever tried. I forgot to do it recently, and when I woke up feeling iffy, I took it. When my husband was studying in China in college, his host Dad decided to 'drink him under the table'. His host mom gave everyone green tea and pomelo. Worked like a charm!
